Herbs That Help Skin Health

    • Herbal remedies naturally treat skin conditions and can help you keep your skin smooth and healthy. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate herbal treatments or supplements. Therefore, always consult your doctor or a professional herbalist before using herbal treatments to avoid dangerous interactions. However, used properly, herbs can keep your skin looking great without the expense of skincare products.

    Turmeric

    • The cosmetic uses for the herb turmeric extend beyond just skincare. The herb is used to provide color to the hair and skin for cosmetic purposes. You can also make turmeric into a paste by adding the powder from the herb with an oil. Olive oil or sweet almond oil are examples of the type of oil that you can use with herbal preparations for the skin. Apply the paste to the skin and rinse for skin cleansing.

    Tea Tree Oil

    • According to Northwestern Health Sciences University, tea tree oil is an effective anti-fungal, anti-viral and antibacterial oil. For skin care, use it to treat acne and other skin rashes caused by a fungus infection. Nail fungus may be treated with tea tree oil.

    Lemon

    • Lemon and lemon oil may be used in skin care preparations that you make at home. Herbal remedies made with lemon can be used to treat rashes on the skin. A dermatologist should diagnose rashes before a home remedy with herbs is started. Patients should use extra caution when spending time in the sun. Lemon can cause the skin to be sensitive to ultra violet light, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

    Antioxidant Herbs

    • Antioxidants and creams made with antioxidants are used for skin care in the treatment of acne and aging skin. Antioxidants, such as green tea, may provide some protection from skin cancer, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Other herbal antioxidants for skincare include aloe, grape seed extract and ginger. There have not been significant studies on these herbs to determine their effectiveness.
